The
wallet, like many innovations, can be traced back to the ancient Greeks
where the word "kibisis" -- typically translated as "wallet" -- was
used to describe the sack in which the hero Perseus carried the head of
the monster Medusa, as well as the pouch carried by Hermes, messenger
of the gods. During the Renaissance, as metals were
increasingly
used as currencies, wallets morphed into something to carry coins and
account statements. With the 1950s came the standardization of the
modern bi-fold wallet, which included multiple card slots for the first
credit cards. Wallets (a.k.a. billfolds) are an essential
men's
accessory and are most often constructed using various types of leather
or fabric.
